The Residence Permit for Investment Activity, known as the Golden Visa, is a scheme under Portuguese immigration law that allows non-EU citizens to obtain residence in Portugal through a qualifying investment. Over recent years the scheme has been amended several times, and some investment routes no longer exist. The first step in any application is therefore to confirm which investment options are accepted under the legislation in force on the date of the application.

Among the routes most sought after today are the subscription of units in qualifying investment funds, from 500 thousand euros, job creation, and support for scientific research or artistic and cultural production. Each route has its own evidentiary requirements, which must be maintained throughout the residence period, and the origin of the funds must be demonstrated with proper documentation.

One feature of the scheme is its reduced stay requirement: as a rule, the holder must be in Portugal for at least seven days in the first year and fourteen days in each subsequent two-year period; in practice, the equivalent of one visit a year. The permit can be extended to the spouse, children and other eligible relatives through family reunification, and it allows travel within the Schengen area.

After five years of legal residence, and provided the other requirements are met, the holder may apply for Portuguese nationality. Because the process involves choosing the investment vehicle, tax planning and an extensive document file, it is advisable to analyse the specific case before any financial commitment.
