Portuguese nationality for grandchildren of Portuguese citizens

Portuguese Nationality Law allows the grandchildren of Portuguese citizens to obtain nationality, provided they meet the legal requirements. The first step is to reconstruct the family line: the applicant must show, through certificates, the link between themselves, their father or mother and their Portuguese grandfather or grandmother, and confirm that the ancestor did not lose their nationality.

The usual documents include the applicant’s birth certificate, that of the parent and that of the grandparent, with the corresponding Portuguese records, as well as an identity document and a criminal record certificate. Brazilian documents generally require an apostille. Discrepancies in names, dates or spellings between certificates are one of the main causes of delay and should be corrected before applying.

The law also requires proof of effective ties to the Portuguese community. These ties can be demonstrated in different ways, such as knowledge of the Portuguese language, under the terms defined by the law and the regulations in force. The application is submitted to the Central Registry Office or other competent services, and follow-up until the final decision can take time.
