D7 or D8 visa: which one is right for you?

The D7 and D8 visas are two of the routes most sought after by Brazilians who want to live in Portugal without an employment contract with a Portuguese company. Both are residence visas, issued by the consulate, which allow entry into the country and a subsequent residence permit application with AIMA. The essential difference lies in the source of the income that supports the stay.

The D7 visa is for people who live on regular passive income, such as pensions, rental income, financial investments or dividends. The reference amount is indexed to the Portuguese national minimum wage and updated annually, with additional percentages for each family member. Applicants must prove that this income is regular and stable, as well as having accommodation in Portugal and means of subsistence.

The D8 visa, known as the digital nomad visa, is for people who work remotely for companies or clients outside Portugal, either as employees or as self-employed professionals. The minimum income required is higher than for the D7, also indexed to the national minimum wage, and applicants must demonstrate the working relationship and the ability to carry out the activity remotely.

Choosing between the two depends on the income profile, career plans and tax implications in Portugal and Brazil. As amounts and requirements are reviewed periodically, it is worth confirming them on the date of the application and preparing the documents in advance.
